Unmasked Hayward Chamber Gives Its Backing To Bufete, Lamnin, Walker

ELECTION '12//HAYWARD SCHOOL BOARD | The Hayward Chamber of Commerce released their endorsements for Hayward Unified School District this past week endorsing former city council candidate Peter Bufete, planning commissioner Sara Lamnin and Cal State East Bay employee, Annette Walker.

The endorsement comes shortly after The Citizen reported last month school board president Jesus Armas’s affair with fellow board member, Maribel Heredia. Since then Armas and Heredia chose not to run for re-election, thus leaving two open seats for candidates to be contested. The third open seat belongs to incumbent Dr. Luis Reynoso, who is running for re-election.

The chamber’s election process is kept confidential from the public and so is its Government Relations Council who interviewed the potential endorsees. Reynoso, who was interviewed by the board, reported Armas is a member of the council.

Reynoso told the Chamber he did not want their endorsement because he believes having Armas on their interviewing board while also being the president of the school board is unethical and a conflict of interest. Hugget was contacted for comment on Armas’s involvement in the endorsement process but has not responded.

Others who partook in the interview process for endorsements allegedly included Christian Zaballos from R. Zaballos & Sons, Inc., Tina Martinez from Bank of the West, Michael Mahoney, former CEO of St. Rose Hospital and George Pacheco Jr., from Pacheco Brothers, according to Reynoso. Also an unidentified pastor from Hayward is also a member of the council.

Both Martinez and Zaballo are part of the Chamber’s Board of Directors as well, according to the Chamber’s Web site. The Pacheco Brothers, a landscaping company, has previously been hired for their services by both the city and HUSD. Reynoso said this was unethical. “Why would you have employees from both the city and the school board part of an endorsement process?” asked Reynoso rhetorically.

Bufete on the other hand had recently disclosed Armas suggested he run for the school board; although he says his main influence to run was from Paul Hodges, board member for the Hayward Area and Recreation Park District. Bufete was also friends with Armas’s son for many years and had attended school together prior to college.

The 22-year old has made a name for himself recently because of his youth and positive demeanor after finishing sixth in last June's primary. Many politicians in the area, such as Hayward Councilwoman Barbara Halliday, have spoken highly of the recent college graduate. The endorsement is likely the biggest one that Bufete has ever received concerning both his prior run for city council and for HUSD.

Both Lamnin and Walker were contacted to comment on their endorsement from the Chamber but have not responded at this time.

Other candidates running for the school board are Heather Reyes, John Taylor and Wandra Williams.

EDIT: Previously said Bufete attended high school with Armas's son. Changed to reflect possible attendance together in either Middle School or High school by referring to the years of attendance as "prior to college."

Peter Bufete went to Hayward High and didn't Armas' kids go I Moreu? That seems inaccurate to say they met at school

Also really weird that former contractors with Husd were part of interview process.

Reynoso is hilarious and brilliant e for telling them he didn't want their endorsement.
I wonder who the pastor was...

The Hayward Chamber of Horrors operates in clouds of shame and is of little to no service of the community.

What are employees and school board members doing in that political committee participating in interviewing school board candidates. Armas and Pacheco? What a way to be corrupt.

We need to make sure that we all do not renew our membership. The chamber needs to have a money back policy for the membership fee. I really want my money back.

I will not vote for anyone endorsed by the chamber. Smart move for Reynoso not to request for the chamber of Hayward endorsement.

Reynosos site sounds like he's dropping out... Weird.

Also Bufete went to HHS, did Armas' kid go to Moreu?

At 10:12, I changed it. I believed it was high school but that may be misinformation. Clarification would be needed by Bufete refuses to speak to me since the last story I ran about him. So it is either Middle School or High School they attended together. I corrected it but I had been informed by Bufete himself before he cut me off that he did attend school, not college, with Armas's son and they were best friends.

I posted oncebefore that I found it very interestsing that the candidates, other than Dr. Reynoso, were not put off by the fact that Armas was a part of the interview committee. I think that it shows that they either have no ethics themselves or they care only for the money/assistance that the chamber can give them. At one time I thought Walker was a reasonable choice, however I am now doubting that. How do I know that I can trust someone to do right by children when she participated in the fiasco of the chamber interview and then accepted the endorsement???

They went to Bret Harte Middle School together

guess this is going to be a slow weekend for commenting. Either folks are going away for one last summer fling or they have finally become tired of all the "crap" that is going on in HUSD.

Hope that this coming Wednesday's BOE meeting is packed with people who are fed up, instead of a room filled with administrators and the few who will not be silenced.

oops, my mistake the next BOE meeting is Sept. 12. Lots of time for people to become complacent and apathetic.

Tavares or Shane? Where is the picture for this article? I recommend a picture of a torture room with a marque of Hayward Chamber of Horrors with a team picture of the chamber in the background.

if Hayward resident were smart, they would see how corrupt Hayward is....vote against all three endorsed candidates---they are ALL political hacks

I guess we're not as smart as all of the citizens of Novato.

Hayward is too corrupt. I will not vote for any of the chamber endorsed candidates. I am upset that not many people in the community are more involved in improving Hayward.

Until the Chamber gets rid of the GOOD OLD BOYS nothing will change. Look what Jesus did, look how Michael Mahoney managed St. Rose, and how many have ruined Hayward only to live in Pleasanton now. It's a crying shame what has happened to Hayward by the haves.

And yet no one signs a simple ePetition, attends public meetings or votes in competent people. Why do those we know are corrupt or unethical keep getting their way? Because the people of Hayward do nothing! You get what you deserve.

I heard a rumor that Wandra Williams works for HUSD now. If that's true, how can she run for the school board. Wouldn't that be the ultimate conflict of interest? Can you check on this, Tavares?

someone is confusing her with Wanda Williams; an employee who retired from Child Welfare and Attendance who has now come back to work for HUSD, replacing Andrew Kevy who was in CWA. They are not the same person.

Hayward is no different than any other city. Stop being so dramatic.

1000 emails in San Leandro for a wind turbine. 16 signatures for an ePetition. Almost 200 comments about a controversial comment in a City of San Leandro race. 3 speakers at the last HUSD meeting addressing the board on Armas and Heredia issues.

Not sure all cities are the same.

The ever famous Latina Bully, Maribel Heredia, showed her ugly face at Faith Ringgold today. She decided that she had the right to tell the staff how to teach, how to manage their classrooms, how to be educators. Now if you read the BOE Code of Conduct, she was in direct violation. Individual board members are banned from appearing at a school site and doing a critique of and to the staff.

Guess ahe just doesn't believe rules apply to her. Too bad the staff is so terrified of retalliation, they allowed her to do her bully job on them. HOW MANY OF YOU OUT THERE IN HUSD EVEN CARE THAT THIS IDIOT HAS BEGUN HER CAMPAIGN OF FEAR AGAIN?

Maribel Hardon you have no shame for your family. Please stay away from ALL the schools and just stick to having sex with your cockroach buddy Jesus Armpits.
A love story made in a toilett.
Jesus Armas loves Maribel Heredia. Both of you leave our schools.

Upset? Simply sign the online petition at www.change.org.

Dr Reynoso and Mr McGee cannot do it themselves. The community needs to step up to stop this travesty impacting our children.

So said but true that is why we have corrupt politicians in Hayward cause not enough people give a damn. Even the local cowardly politicians have not come forward to say anything but if anything just criticize how they would have handled sleazy Jesus Armas and Maribel Heredia. This area is full of sleaze bags!!

We need to get rid of Brunner, too. She is nothing more than a puppet controlled by the bed buddies that casts the over riding vote. Easy stipend money, just do what we tell you and get money for doing nothing, you don't even have to think.

All these recommended indorsements are either controlling old money families or those who have benefited from them. It's time to flush them all down the toilet.

The teachers union condones the affair of Jesus Armas and Maribel Heredia. Love is in the air.

The sleaze couple has been spotted in romantic walks at Fairview elementary.
Maribel Heredia and Jesus Armas were walking TOGETHER through Fairview elementary room by room. Their physical distance to each other was very telling. I just don't know why they don't just announce to the district that they are in love. All the parents and teachers were talking of how weird that these two sleazy people show up to a school dedication. Thank you Lisa Brunner for not supporting the investigation. I hope you are recalled soon Lisa Brunner. I say recall Jesus Armas, Maribel Heredia, and Lisa Brunner.

Let's see how many of the candidates actually attend and speak at the HUSD Board meetings! The ones that do will get my vote.

If any school board candidates do speak at the HUSD Board meetings, I suggest they talk about how they will change the district, not cupcakes and cake sales. How will they get the district out of deficit spending? Will they clean up district office management and get rid of the crooks, liars and lazy folks? Let’s hear about some real changes to HUSD? Let's hear about some real changes to improve public education in HUSD for the students...all the students!
