The Bids For The 15th Congressional District's Unfortunate Soldiers

CONGRESS//15TH DISTRICT | Veterans have had enough of the battlefield, but the race for Rep. Eric Swalwell’s seat in Congress is increasingly leaning toward becoming another type of battleground, one in which each candidate vies for who can do more for those returning from the armed services, past and present.

Two weeks ago, Swalwell held a town hall with dozens of veterans in Hayward to highlight the extensive backlog of benefit request. Depsite the clear need to address the county's backlog of services to veterans, Swalwell, nevertheless, has often wrapped himself in the flag in the past.

Over the past year and during his run for congress, Swalwell routinely speaks to veterans groups and takes every opportunity to pose for photos. Armed services abroad and strong support for local law enforcement generally plays well, but it flourishes in the more moderate Tri Valley and that makes it a clear advantage for Swalwell.

During the Urban Shield paramilitary exercises held two weeks ago in Alameda County, Swalwell took a point to post successive photos of him touring a local law enforcement facility. In one shot he donned the baseball cap of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency and another featured Alameda County Sheriffs Department.

Swalwell embracing a vet last week.
In recent weeks, though, State Sen. Ellen Corbett has been doing her own 10-hut while firing volleys back at Swalwell’s attention to veterans. She, too, has appeared at various events for vets and posted her own gallery of photos hobnobbing with members of the armed services on social media.

The move suggests Corbett believes she can encroach on Swalwell’s base of veterans or limit it from growing. Either way, it’s a signal the race in the 15th Congressional District will again resides in the Tri Valley and not the more liberal Hayward area. In contrast, Swalwell’s first moves last month raised the alarm on Pete Stark attempting to influence the 2014 election with contributing to Corbett’s campaign. To some this indicates Swalwell is willing to somewhat alienate Hayward voters who strongly supported Stark last year and would likely support Corbett next year, by blowing a dog whistle that clearly agitates Tri Valley voters who still loath Stark.

In the meantime, with the end of the year around the corner, what does a challenger do to chisel away at the incumbent’s strength? How about obscure “Legislator of the Year” awards? On Thursday, Corbett announced the California Association of County Veterans Service Officers (CACVSO) bestowed her such a title for work for veterans, including a bill signed into law this year stopping groups from using services logos and emblems on products without authorization.

“I look forward to continuing to work with the CACVSO in the months and years ahead to ensure that our veterans and service members receive all of the benefits that they are due following their patriotic service to our country,” said Corbett in statement.

Not only are there benefits to do had for veterans, but also for congressional candidates

Eric is a good man. Just stay the course and he'll be fine.

Corbett is better. This should be a great race and fun to watch.

She has no chance at all. Shopping around for another gig since she's termed out.

Corbett wins easy because Swalwell has pissed off everyone including conservatives and moderates.

Whatever you're smoking it's the bad stuff. Our man is riding high, because he's doing a great job. Really need to come back down to reality. Your gal is the day-before-yesterday's news, and way past it!

Steven,
After reading your tweets I am left with the question of why the Congressman should talk to you, Based on your previous blog posts you have been abundantly clear about your dislike of him. You have never claimed journalistic impartiality. You ashow some political intelligence. Why should he talk to you?

Steve, just a point of clarification. The County does not have a backlog of veterans of applications. The County does not process VA claims for Vets. The County's VA office simply assists vets in filling out the forms, and helps educate veterans and their families on what benefits they are entitled to. The backlog issue is with the Federal VA, not County.

Wow, such a huge organization, right?

Careful inspection indicates the entire organization in the whole state has only 85 members.
Further, they are mostly public employees.

Hardly representative of the tens of thousands of veterans living in Alameda County.
Members of CACVSO that reside in the congressional district.
That would be 2.....Yes, TWO members of CACVSO live in the district..

So instead of splitting those two votes with Swalwell, Corbett will now get both votes.
A net pick up of ONE VOTE.

Keep at it Corbett, you are chipping away at his lead.

I wish Swallwell staffers would stop trying to prop up their boss. They continually post on this and other blogs as the last 4 posts have shown. It won't help their boss get one more vote. Ellen Corbett wins in 2014. Swallwell has made more mistakes and changed his mind more in one year than most politicians in a life time. One and done for the kid.

I see, and you are just a regular Joe, unconnected to Ellen's campaign. Or perhaps a staff member wondering where they'll be working in 2015.

I'm not a staff member, but I can tell you are. I'm someone who voted for Swallwell last time because he ran against Stark, who I was not crazy about. I now think that was a huge mistake, and If I had to do it again, I wouldn't. I just like Ellen more. Right now she's my Senator.

Agree with 10:14, my family and I will never vote for Swalwell again, he's screwed up right and left, as the citizen has pointed out, and he seems to be devoid of any principles. I'm a conservative who lives in Livermore and will vote for anyone else before that two faced attorney. Like it or not, I do know where Corbett stands. Even though I disagree with some of the things she does, I like her as a person and will vote for her if the choice is between the two of them.

Now 11:33 is agreeing with herself. Yeah, we get it.

Hi Swallwell staff member I'm a male who does not live in Livermore and posted 10:14. I just happen to like Ellen Corbett more than Swallwell and I have voted for, and followed both. Don't know who posted 11:33.

Once again, the 33% of voters who are still undecided, are sloshed from side to side, swaying back and forth with each eagerly anticipated new comment.

With only 12 months before election day, the tension in tens of thousands of Alameda County homes is palpable.

I'm a veteran of three tours of duty and will be supporting our kick ass congressman.

Go Eric!

I live in Pleasanton, voted for Swalwell last time , but agree that Corbett is more principled and will probably vote for her if no one else jumps into the race. When He was on the Dublin Council he took money from the developers and voted for all their projects which led to more pollution and higher asthma
rates. Not at all acceptable! I have a wife and kids, one of whom has asthma. I consider myself a moderate declined to state.

Ellen has been showing up for almost all of the Veteran's Day events for as long as I can remember. That's why I have voted for her along with many other reasons for State Senator twice. She has compassion and courage and has helped many of us in her Senate District when asked. My family and I will vote for Ellen in 2014.

Congressman Swalwell has been doing an excellent job. He has my back and definitely my vote next year.

Ellen has always stood with us Veterans, and we will always stand and support her. She has been with us for many years. Veterans would love Ellen to be our Congress person!

Not to worry. It won't be happening, but the congressman will do right by you.

Ellen Corbett will win easily because she is more caring and competent than the mistake prone kid. She wins in 2014 by 55% to 45%. You can count on us who you have helped. Thank You.

Congressman Swalwell has been doing an excellent job. He has my back and definitely my vote next year.

Our veteran's group had a meeting, took a straw poll, and Ellen Corbett beat Swallwell by a 2-1 margin. Kind of surprised me.

Ellen has consistently been there for us Veterans. It doesn't surprise me.

Eric is great supporter of the VA. He's been doing right by me, and I'm a Vietnam era vet. We love him in the Valley.

Nice try. Again, no cigar.

The only veteran that you are is a veteran rabble-rouser for the Corbett folks. You're fooling no one. Stop demeaning good, honest American vets by pretending to be one. Really low.

Eric is great supporter of the VA. He's been doing right by me, and I'm a Vietnam era vet. We love him in the Valley.

We like the congressman. He as earned his place.

I'm a Vietnam veteran and the group of vets I hang with love Ellen Corbett because she has consistently been there for us for over a dozen years. Thank you Ellen, we have your back. We'll help you just like you've helped us.

I'm a vet who for years has watched Ellen take part in our parades, come to our meetings, and take part in our flag raising ceremonies. Where was Eric? Now that he is running scared of losing his seat, he is showing up. Too late! Ellen Corbett for Congresswoman in 2014 says this vet and family.

Outside of Hayward Eric has the VA vote. We typically go with incumbents who have done right by us. He's a good man, and we will support him in 2014, especially since he's not a radical Democrat but moderate like us.

The only radical is the above poster. I associate with vets all over the Congressional District and I promise you they mostly like Ellen because of all the things she has done for them. They think your candidate is only using them for photo opportunities. You would know this if you were a vet instead of a cheerleader for your opportunist candidate.

They think your candidate is only using them for photo opportunities. You would know this if you were a vet instead of a cheerleader for your opportunist candidate.

I'm a veteran that lives in Pleasanton and while we trust Ellen on Social Security and Medicare issues( many of us are collecting these), we don't trust Eric. He's talked out of both sides of his mouth on these issues depending on the audience. Most vets will vote for Ellen Corbett because of that.

I served in Nam and my fellow vets and me will be voting for congressman Swalwell cause he cares about are experiences. He aint no bleeding liberal, good solid mainstream Demo. Got are support.

I also served in Nam and the Vets I hang with mostly like Ellen better than Eric, because she and her staff has helped a lot of us and participated in our events throughout her career.

Dorcas, you continue to lie.

Folks, the previous two comments come from one Dorcas Wentzel. She also goes by the name Space Ho. She is 67 years old and lives in her parents basement in Berkeley. Her adopted mother has disowned her and good folks, including Ted Corbett, ex-husband of Ellen, are trying to have her returned to Napa, where she was institutionalized. She is off her meds again and continues to have this pathetic, insane fixation with Ellen Corbett. Ellen has refused anything to do with Dorcas but she continues to fantasize to the point of an almost fatal attraction.

Please excuse her wild and ranting impersonations of everyone from a Mexican to our country's veterans. She is deeply, deeply disturbed.

Anon above: What the hell are you talking about? Are you off your meds? You make no sense. It seems you are in need of some help.

Well, the Space HO's at it again.

Continue to tune out her bloated bitch ass.

The only person we are tuning out is you 2:02. What an idiot. Why waste our time? ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

6:46 do you know how stupid you sound? You are wasting our time! It seems like you are the disturbed one.

Ellen you have always been there for us vets, and we will be there for you. We have your back. A vietnam vet

I'm not a vet but my wife is. She and I will be voting for Ellen Corbett next year.

My friends and I are Vietnam vets and if you were, you would know many of us are on Social Security and Medicare and we don't trust Swallwell because he says one thing and does another. He now says he is opposed to cuts or the chained CPI, but before, he was aligned with the Blue Dog democrats and was amenable to changing it. We can't afford cuts to Social Security and Medicare as many of us are barely making it. The bottom line is Ellen Corbett has always supported us vets and we just don't trust Eric.

Korean war vet here. If god smiles on us, my wife and I will vote for Ellen Corbett next year. She has personally helped us in the past when we had a problem and we have voted for her twice for Senate. Eric seems like a nice boy but I can't think of anything he did on the Dublin Council or so far in Congress. We hope and pray Ellen wins.

We vets are with you Ellen. Thanks for all you have done for us. We won't be fooled by the Eric come lately. Corbett for Congress in 2014 because you have supported us for years. Thanks

My dad was in Korea and grand-dad in WWII. We'll all be voting for Congressman Swalwell. Can't trust that whack job Corbett. She aint even running.

I'm the poster at 2:49. Forgot to mention that we're all members of the Bleeding Hearts Brigade. We only support union whores who ass lick and rename bridges for corrupt good old boy slick pimpin' politicians. You got our support, missy. On account of you know how to bake cookies!

Shame on Swalwell for cutting off benefits for 1.3 million Americans. The extension of federal benefits was started by Bush and continued by both parties when the unemployment rate was this high.

It's about real people, people with families struggling to meet mortgage payments, struggling to put food on the table, to make ends meet, and includes 200,000 military veterans among those folk who are losing their benefits.

This is why my friends and I will be voting for Ellen Corbett this year....she has a heart and cares about the 90% of us who aren't rich too. Shame on Swalwell.
