Swalwell Falls Short of Winning Alameda County Dems Endorsement

ELECTION 2014 | CONGRESS | 15TH DISTRICT | Rep. Eric Swalwell may very well win the endorsement of the statewide party, but Alameda County Democrats made it a bit more difficult Saturday afternoon at a pre-endorsement meeting in advance of next month's party convention in Los Angeles.

Swalwell, who received 45 votes, fell short of gaining the 70 percent threshold needed for pre-endorsement by seven votes. State Senate Majority Leader Ellen Corbett tallied 26 votes, and three registered no endorsement.

Depending on the spin of Saturday’s results, Swalwell either came within a hair of winning the endorsement or the number of ballots punched for Corbett reveals a local party still skeptical about their first-term congressman. Residual loyalty, by some, for Corbett, a long-time public official in the area, who has served the area for nearly two decades may also explain Saturday’s vote.

On Twitter, Corbett called the results unprecedented for an incumbent member of Congress in Alameda County to fail to win the party’s pre-endorsement. “When was the last time #CA15 incumbent didn’t get enough votes for endorsement @CA_Dem @CADemRegion2 Pre-Endorsement Conference? Never Before Today!”

Nonetheless, Swalwell still has the inside track to gain the statewide party’s backing next month when the question will be debated on the convention floor. According to party bylaws, Swalwell, as the incumbent, only needs a simple majority of the votes to win in this round of the endorsement process, rather than the 70 percent tally needed this weekend. Generally speaking, the Democratic Party’s statewide imprimatur is often the most important endorsement a candidate will receive.

Good God, Corbett is through, when she can't even capture more than 35% of hard-core Democrats.

Combine that dismal showing and then think about her trying to get the votes of more moderate Democrats, independents, and Republicans come November.

What happened to all those "progressives" living west of the hills?
Did she even get half of them.

This election is all but over. That is the political reality.

Of course we can expect a post from that guy who will tell us that HE and all of his FAMILY will be voting for Ellen.
He says that every 4 days.

Then the really absurd quote on her Twitter account.

" “When was the last time #CA15 incumbent didn’t get enough votes for endorsement @CA_Dem @CADemRegion2 Pre-Endorsement Conference? Never Before Today!”"

Oh pleeze Ellen. What you are talking about is 40 years of nothing but Pete Stark, Pete Stark, and Pete Stark.
Alameda County Democrats rolled over on their back every time he entered the room... Like the Pope was walking in.

That tweet really makes Ellen look like she is grasping for straws. Either that or she is out of touch with reality.

She's got no money and very thin support from anyone other than the hard core "progressive" element.
Who else is she gonna pick up?

It's not the worst news, but Swalwell should have put this one to bed today.

I saw Tavares chasing down Eric today. The guy couldn't walk fast enough to get away.

Breaking news ... Swalwell gets Tea Party endorsement!

For Ellen to only receive 36% of the Central Committee vote does not bode well for her election. She has been a member of this committee in some fashion for about 40 years.

It's a bigger pool than just the central committee. Also includes Democratic club members. That's why the number of voters varied.

Already buying my ticket to Eric's re-election in DC!

I dont know it was a weird day. Mike Honda and Barbara Lee got overwhelming endorsements. I like Swalwell, but I thought he should have got it. Pete Stark got the endorsement by a strong and clear margin in 2012, and he couldn't even beat a state senator?

I don't live in the district and don't care who wins, but this tells me Corbett has some chance. Swalwell should have taken care of this and made sure he had those extra 7 votes. Hell, he should have made sure he had 10 more just in case. He had an opportunity to make Corbett's bid very unlikely and now she's still standing the same or better than she was before yesterday.

Actually this was a huge win for Swalwell - he hasn't completed one term and still beat Corbett in votes. Corbett knows every person on the central committee and the club representatives very very well - unfortunately for her - they KNOW her too.

Bottom line, Swalwell will get the democratic endorsement at convention and will be the party's endorsed candidate. That's a huge win.

Corbett should have worked harder - if my math is correct she only neede 9 people to flip or vote no endorsement. She failed to do so. Corbett should look for an appointment from Governor Brown soon - her political career is finished.

Look at all the scared Swalwell staffers posting!

In reality this doesn't mean jack because Pete Stark cleaned Swalwell's clock at the endorsement vote and look what happened. This election, as the last one, will not be decided at the polls. Ellen has a lot of accomplishments but no money. Swalwell has a lot of money but no accomplishments.

*WILL be decided at the polls. It will be interesting to see what carries the day--Ellen's deep record or Swalwell's DC money and indefatigable army of canvassers.

It appears Ellen can't get 50% of Democrats.

How in the world can she take that showing and then plan to do even better with independents and Republicans?

Can some one show me the math on that one?
Seriously, what is her path to victory?

Some folks here seem to live in insulated worlds, talking to only those who think like they do.

The party endorsement is crucial for two reasons - 1. The person is automatically listed on the official Democratic Party vote card and mailers. 2. Labor groups and organizations look to who has the party endorsement when considering their own endorsement and contributions.

Corbett didn't block the endorsement process - Swalwell will get it at the convention. Huge blunder for Corbett.

All the negative comments about swalwell on this blog are minor - a lot are untrue - none of them are severe enough to say he should be fired. His own party is not saying anything close.

Swalwell's public actions are not even close to Stark's rants = character.

The road to victory is Swalwell's.

Corbett has decades long relationships with the voting endorsement members of the party - her "record" failed to get her endorsed - you can't deny that!

It speaks volumes that a sitting member of Congress can not get the local activists to rally around him.

Either:
a) he has done nothing policy wise that resonates with them
b) has done something that they oppose
c) there's a candidate that better represents their values
d) all of the above

9:00 am - do you live in la la land? Swalwell got a vast majority of Democratic Party representatives to vote for him. Corbett did not - even with her "record of accomplishments".

This is not an open seat - swalwell is the US Rep. Corbett has the burden of proof to show why he should be fired and she should replace him. She couldn't do that within her own party. They know both candidates. Swalwell will get the enordement at convention - he only needs a majority of voting memebers.

The ship for Corbett to congress sailed about 15 months ago - Saturday was the first proof.

Show me what other sitting Congressman doesn't get their own county party endorsements? Shit even the philanderers, the drug addicts, and outright cheaters get endorsed across the country. THIS CONGRESSMAN DID NOT.

The question should be WHY?
Why dont these loyal dems rally around this DEM?
Maybe cuz he caters to the other side! Maybe cuz he cuts UE benefits for millions of Americans! Maybe cuz he rather make silly videos than be embracing the progressive values of his district.

Swalwell takes it. Welcome back to the 2014-16 session, Eric!

Didn't he say he would work with Republicans? Enough said. How did you work with obstructionists?

Thank you Steven . Keep posting the truth. All the major newspapers in the Bay Area are owned by ultra-conservative right wingers. None of them have independent journalists. They all follow the company line and do what they are told to do.

Anon above is definitely a Swalwell staffer. Come Jan 1st of next year that staffer will be out of work and looking for unemployment benefits. Our new Congresswoman will be Ellen Corbett, and most of us can't wait for the progressive change.

p.s. Try and stay on topic of Swalwell flip flopping and sticking it to 1.3 million Americans by cutting off their unemployment benefits during the Holiday season and then bragging about it. In contrast Barbara Lee did the right thing and voted against the cut.

Ellen Corbett should win easily against this heartless incumbent!

Well, our little or should I say BIG Space HO is back. We were certainly hoping that she had left this world for good. Oh, well. Bitch sure had her head handed to her with her loser Whorbett losing out with any hope of an endorsement.

That's the real world smell of Victory that the Swalwell team has going for it.

Hey Steve,
Just so all of your readers are clear, please show us the complete list of pay pal founders to this blog. I heard your major funder is union money. Show us it isn't true.

How many candidates for public office have given you money for positive coverage? Just between you and me. Show who has paid money to ebcitizen please. I will donate $100. If you come clean

Wow, another legislative mulligan by the deceiver. Keep the stories coming Steven. I'd like to see one about the million dollars he's raised by catering to vested interests. I know he got money from pharmaceutical companies and other corporations that are sticking it to the middle class.

Why do you Swalwell puppies just cut & paste your replies? Is it cuz you are so use to being what to believe and say? You are perfect for Fox News and the Tea Party. No wonder you love Swalwell.

Definitely a Swalwell staffer or troll posting at 11:24 and 11:27. You shouldn't be attacking Tavares, you should be attacking your lying congressman!

Shame on Swalwell for cutting off benefits for 1.7 million Americans. The extension of federal benefits was started by Bush and continued by both parties when the unemployment rate was this high.

It's about real people, people with families struggling to meet mortgage payments, struggling to put food on the table, to make ends meet, and includes 200,000 military veterans among those folk who are losing their benefits.

This is why my friends and I will be voting for Ellen Corbett this year....she has a heart and cares about the 90% of us who aren't rich too.

Say good-bye Swalwell staffer above. You and your lying, flip-flopping, and mistake prone congressman will soon be gone after this years election. Say hello to our new Congresswoman Ellen Corbett who is more sincere and more people trust her.

Wow 4:57 You really are a kiss ass staffer, but at least you are not posting during work hours which would be against the law. Oh wait, some of your posts on this and other articles have been during work hours, wasting taxpayer money.

It matters what Swalwell did when he voted to cut off benefits to 1.7 million Americans just before the holiday season. 200,000 military veterans were also affected. What an a--hole! He had the gall to try and defend his actions by saying he was doing the right thing.

Barbara lee did the right thing and stood up to the leadership and voted against cutting off those benefits. We need more women who seem to care more about the middle and lower class. That's why I'll be voting for Ellen Corbett.

I have a friend and her family that was affected by the decision of this current heartless congressman and they will probably lose their home.

Vote Ellen Corbett in 2014 because Swalwell doesn't deserve our vote after what he did to those who lost their job through no fault of their own.

I don't think there has ever been a time when an incumbent congressional dem didn't get the support of the local democratic party. This shows how vulnerable he is in his own district.

It doesn't matter what the statewide dems do. They don't get to vote in the district, walk the district precincts, or man the phone banks. It's the locals that do that.

Swalwell is in trouble and his supporters know that. Ellen has more than a fighting chance. She could easily win because she is extremely popular among the middle class and lower class, while he is not.

Who is supporting her? The answer is NO ONE.

She has NO endorsements. Fortney's $$ alone can't help.

Bitch has been kicked to the curb and in the gutter even by her 'friends.' She's not relevant.

Thank you, Mr. President.

Every loyal Democrat will be following your lead. We will return our great congressman Eric Swalwell to help you do the work of the country.

We're all with you!

It's Bye Bye Swalwell, hello Congresswoman Ellen Corbett. Swalwell has made too many mistakes and lied too many times for this voter. Ellen will have the walkers and phone bankers, Swalwell won't. She is just more likable and trustworthy. She won't make the mistakes Stark made.

Yes, our pumped congressman has the endorsement, along with all the others. Got the $$$$, and POTUS to boot.

He's unstoppable. That wind that just blew you over is the SWALWELL EXPRESS roaring down the tracks!

The voters in our District will reject our current Congressman, because they don't like liars who say one thing and do another. Ellen Corbett is the clean candidate and now with the Republican in the race, she wins the primary no matter how corporate money your candidate spends. She is much more qualified too!

Mrs. Miller and I will be supporting our outstanding CONGRESSMAN ERIC SWALWELL. We can't support novices who have no idea what they are doing and would be in above their head. We also would never support anyone who whores for the unions. The public knows that teachers and nurses' unions are nothing but whores for the special interests. They resonate with special interests only.

We'll be supporting a breath of fresh air, CONGRESSMAN ERIC SWALWELL 2014!

Go through this stream of posts and you will see most of the extremists, swearing, sexist remarks have been from Swallwell supporters, and that's why many of us will be supporting Ellen in 2014. Plus many of us feel that we need more women in Congress because of the stubbornness of both sides. Women seem to be able to compromise more and work toward solutions instead of calling people names.
