East Bay’s Betty Yee, Ellen Corbett Show Signs of Fight at Party Convention

CAMPAIGN 2014 | If anything, last weekend’s State Democratic Party Convention provided hints two female veteran East Bay may make things interesting come June and possibly beyond.

Alameda’s Betty Yee blocked Assembly Speaker John Perez from gaining the all-important party endorsement in their state controller race. Yee, a member of the State Board of Equalization nearly matched Perez’s delegate total. However, neither was close to reaching the 60 percent threshold with Perez edging out Yee, 48-45 percent.

East Bay Rep. Eric Swalwell gained the party’s backing Saturday night, but similar to his delegate count at a pre-endorsement meeting last month, Swalwell barely crossed the 50 percent needed at the convention for incumbents. Swalwell won 37 of 67 ballots for 55 percent of the vote over State Senate Majority Leader Ellen Corbett, who garnered 24 delegates. There were six no endorsements cast and an addition six blank ballots.

No matter the results of the final delegate count, voters in the 15th Congressional District will only see Swalwell’s name on the party’s slate cards in the coming months. However, both delegate counts show the district’s political leaders are still not entirely sold on the first-time congressman over the more experienced and well-known Corbett.

The inclusion of Alameda County Republican Party vice chair Hugh Bussell last week to the June primary may also be a potential hindrance to the favored Swalwell posting a convincing win over Corbett on June 3. The top-two, regardless of party affiliation, advance to the November general election.

The fact that Bussell jumped into the race is big trouble for our incumbent congressman. Most of the voters don't care what the party leaders or slate cards say. Most of the conservatives will vote for Bussell and most of the liberals will vote for Corbett. The only people left for Swalwell are the middle of the roaders, which may leave him in 3rd place. Very interesting.

Dream on...11:12.

Regarding "may also be a potential hindrance to the favored Swalwell posting a convincing win over Corbett on June 3"

Swalwell only needs to be on the November ballot. He doesn't need a "convincing win" in June to have a easy victory in November.
Corbett on the other hand, needs a huge margin in June to have any chance in November.

As to the Republican, he will perform as have all other Republicans over the past 40 years. Hope he has enough campaign contributions to cover his filing fee.

Just back from the convention. So stoked about Eric.

He's the official candidate of the Democratic Party. Everyone is supporting his re-election from the president on down. We'll all be there for you, cutie!

Never been this interested in government before Eric got elected. He really convinced me and my daughters that government can work for us.

Team Swalwell ready for action!

Thank you Swalwell staffer posting on the taxpayers dime on a workday. You know full well 55% at the convention for an incumbent is a horrible result. If he wasn't an incumbent he would need 60%. In fact most incumbents aren't forced to go to the Convention to get the votes necessary because they can get the votes at their local caucuses. A lot of the Convention delegates are appointed by party leaders, but they don't necessarily reflect the voters in the District.

Swalwell is very worried and he should be with the Republican drawing most of his anti-Stark votes. This sets up Ellen Corbett nicely as she is very popular in the District and Democratic voters don't follow their leaders the way Republicans do. She has won races against 2 men before in her run for the Senate when she was picked to finish last.

Since most of the voters in this District were in her old Senate or Assembly Districts and love her according to the votes she received, she should finish first in the primary with slightly over 40%. That means the Republican only needs 30% to come in second. Very doable. Bye Congressman.

Look, I don't care what other people at the convention or the democratic federal or state officials say. My family has voted for Ellen Corbett twice as Senator and we like her and trust her more than Swalwell.

12:37... I see your "family" has voted for Ellen Corbett twice..

OK, I see your family votes and raise them by 11....
I'll be rounding up my entire family, and even inviting Uncle Jed and his brothers to all come here in May from Louisiana, so they can register and vote for Swalwell.
If you bump that vote, I call upon Aunt Jessie from Utah to come and bolster our Swalwell vote by 4 more with her family.
Sure it will be a tight squeeze between now and June, but we've got to trump your "family" vote... which you bring up in every thread.

9;00 AM -- " Ellen Corbett is extremely popular "

"extremely popularl"... Oh yeah, just go to a few houses in the district and you'll see her picture on the walls of their kitchens.
Why, she's a regular FDR.

What are you smoking? , most folks couldn't give a rat's behind about her. Not saying they don't accept her, but you make it sound like they love her.
That is absurd. Sure they like her better than they liked Mary Hayashi (pre-conviction)... but most folks have nothing more than a "she's OK", feeling about her.
Nothing approaching "extremely popular" except for a few old bitties who attend every town hall meeting and get Ellen to autograph their Medicare cards.

Hey Swallwell staffer........Do you know how sexist and ageist you sound? What do you and the congressman have against seniors? Does he know you are posting on taxpayer time and how you are condescending to women and seniors? Ellen is very popular in the area I live in and I'm not a senior, but will be voting for her.

".Do you know how sexist and ageist you sound? What do you and the congressman have against seniors? Does he know you are posting on taxpayer time and how you are condescending to women and seniors? "

Yes, by all means, be perfectly politically correct.
Never watch SNL or the monologues of the three 11:30 PM shows.

You prefect represent the hide bound old guard of the East Bay, where everyone marches in lock step, never even allowing humor to poke out...
Anyone says anything that isn't 100% PC, jump on that instantly.
Perhaps we should have microphones in the candidates kitchens and bedrooms.

So tired of your vigilance. The entire district is tired of being bossed around by the old guard of the East Bay Democratic party.
We finally got rid of Pete, who you guys were more than willing to retain, and now you have regathered, thinking you're gonna take back your power.

Thank goodness for Maldonado or we'd still have Stark looking for one more term, and you'd still be backing him out of "respect"...

Voted for Swalwell last time, will vote for Corbett this time. Just don't trust our lying, flip-flopping Congressman. True dat!

No. It's called 'evolution.'

We've got news for YOU, that's our generation.

Get used to it, or move.

4:25, "In the June election there will be a preponderance of senior votes in a low turnout. Most of us will be voting for Ellen because she..."

Too bad the June election is meaningless since both Corbett and Swalwell will make it to November.
The only election that counts is in November.
As you'll recall, Pete Stark "won" the June primary.

But be of good spirit because as you may remember, Pete Stark said last year that he'll be willing to spend a good deal of his millions to help Corbett defeat Swalwell, the "rookie".

We eagerly await Pete's first contribution of $10,000 or more from his large fortune.
Oh Pete.... Oh Pete.... Hmm, Pete seems to have gone silent.
Can't even hear him fishing for change in his pocket.

No re-Pete for Fortney. He's currently rocking on the porch, waiting to sip that lemonade that what's her name will be making when she sets on her rocker long side o him.

Hope she's learning to bake cookies, too!

Since the last three posts were from the same sexist Swalwell troll.........you must really be worried..........and you should be!

Ellen Corbett will come in first in the primary with well over 40% of the vote. With a credible Republican in the race your candidate will be lucky to come in second. If the Republican can get in the high twenties your candidate could easily come in third.

Then what good will all that big business and corporate money do him. It will be good for the economy though. Voters in our district don't reward people who try and buy the election. They also don't reward candidates who flip flop on issue after issue.

You are a lunatic.
" Voters in our district don't reward people who try and buy the election"

Nadia Lockyer, cough, cough!

Since we're speaking of the Lockyers, Bill basically did similar to what Eric did. He used his money to buy the Dem Party endorsement. Eric paid for his supporters to attend the Dem Party convention. It's the same.

Oh yeah Bill Lockyer endorses Eric Swalwell. That's all you need to know.

Glad to see the Sexist troll for Swalwell is still posting Anon 9:42. You must be worried that your candidate for Congress will come in third now that a Republican has jumped into the race. It shows what kind of people support Swalwell and will only help Ellen Corbett win. In fact, you have convinced my daughter, who is registered independent, to vote for Ellen. Thanks!

Keep the stories coming Steven. I'd like to see one about the million dollars he's raised by catering to vested interests. I know he got money from pharmaceutical companies and other corporations that are sticking it to the middle class. Ellen Corbett is more trustworthy.

To anon 3:19 Keep thinking that staffer, but you and I both know your internal poll showed Ellen Corbett beating your man. Release the poll. Your man won't be able to buy this election with all the corporate money he's taken. He's not running against Stark this time, but a much more qualified and likable woman.

3:38 PM, Wait a minute, you supported Stark. Now you tell us he was a cranky old unqualified bastard.... but you wanted everyone to return him for another 2 or 4 years.

That is why the general public is no longer following the dictates of the old guard in Alameda County.
You sold us out for too many years.

Did not vote for Stark last time because I wanted to give Swalwell a chance. That's a mistake I won't repeat again. This time I will vote for Ellen Corbett because I think she cares more for the middle and lower class than Swalwell. Plus, I think Swalwell is corrupt and a liar. Go back and read some of the EBCitizen articles.

Sure like the articles are unbiased...
Ellen is going to do fine in June.
In November she'll fall short of Stark's percentage.
Unless she does something magical, she appears to be to the left of Swalwell. There is no way to win by going to the left of Swalwell. Not enough voters in that segment and then you lose independents and Republicans.
Combine that problem with lack of funds and the outcome seems in little doubt.
She can hardly paint Swalwell as some right winger when Obama has endorsed him.

NO, she is in one tough spot.
She can only hope Swalwell gets caught shoplifting at Neiman Marcus.

The voters in our District will reject our current Congressman, because they don't like liars who say one thing and do another. Ellen Corbett is the clean candidate and now with the Republican in the race, she wins the primary no matter how much corporate money your candidate spends. She is much more qualified too!

Then she wins the General in November because the voters are fed up with our current flip-flopper and mistake prone Congressman! Then all will be well. True dat!

Of course he could be a Corbett supporter trying to drum up antagonism towards Swalwell.

Somebody told me Farias is running again for the Hayward city council. Calling people names won't get it for this sexist joke of a candidate.

I agree. Obviously the Corbett folks who are so desperate that they have resorted to the old 'stab their own candidate in the back' and then blame the opposition. Pathetic.

They are so far down that they have resorted to the same type of crap that they did in Germany.

Thank you Swalwell staffer posting on the taxpayers money on a workday.

" Since most of the voters in this District were in her old Senate or Assembly Districts and love her according to the votes she received,"

I love it. You accept past votes, when there was no top two in place as proof that the voters loved Corbett.
The typical races over the past 4 decades were a Democrat incumbent vs a no-name, no-money, place holder, for the Republican ticket.
Usually some guy they talked into the spot and gave him some money for the filing fee.
No campaign, no door to door, no funds, simply put, no campaign.
That is how you get the same 70%-30% "victory" election after election.
Even Pete Stark, who folks were sick and tired of, kept getting such knee-jerk "support".

So sure, go ahead and make believe that all Democrats love Corbett and all the past "leaders" who had a tight grip on our local politics.

Sure, we all loved them... sure we did. Tell that to Pete....
That is why Honda is a "lock" to win.

You are living in a laughable past, assuming all those past victories were as they appeared.
Sure, the people just loved those candidates... just look at the lopsided vote totals.

LOL...same group think that Pete Stark's "pros" walked to victory with.

Keep thinking that staffer, but you and I both know your internal poll showed Ellen Corbett beating your man. Release the poll. Your man won't be able to buy this election with all the corporate money he's taken. He's not running against Stark this time, but a much more qualified and likable woman.

Mrs. Miller and I will be supporting our outstanding CONGRESSMAN ERIC SWALWELL. We can't support novices who have no idea what they are doing and would be in above their head. We also would never support anyone who whores for the unions. The public knows that teachers and nurses' unions are nothing but whores for the special interests. They resonate with special interests only.

We'll be supporting a breath of fresh air, CONGRESSMAN ERIC SWALWELL 2014!

Can't vote for Swalwell when he's got supporters like you 8:35. Talk about a sexist. You belong back in the 18th century. There are a lot more issues I care about than your single minded hatred of unions. I'll be voting for Ellen Corbett and so will many of my friends. I doubt your candidate will even be in the run off with the Republican now in the race. I think even you are starting to realize that. We need more people who care and are truthful in Congress. Practice saying Congresswoman Corbett.

The voters in our District will dismiss our current Congressman, in light of the fact that they don't prefer liars who say one thing and do an alternate.
