Celebrating Earth Day After Stuffing Your Wallet With Calpine Money

Swalwell tweeted this photo Tuesday
from Hayward's Eden Landing.
HAYWARD | ENVIRONMENT | The Eden Landing ecological reserve on the Hayward shoreline is just miles south from the polluting Calpine Russell City Energy Center. During this primary season, Hayward mayoral candidates and Assemblymember Bill Quirk have been harangued by the deeply unpopular natural gas-fired power plant that was found earlier this year to be polluting the area with 10 times the amount of allowable water particulate.

Some candidates have resorted to hyperbole to describe the potential damage to the ecosystem, but others like Quirk have been saddled with criticism over their support for the plant and the thousands of dollars in campaign contributions they received from Calpine and its executives.

So, on this Earth Day, it was a bit ballsy for another local official to pose like he was helping rehabilitate the San Francisco Bay's marshlands when, he too, counts Calpine as one of his largest campaign donors. On Tuesday, Rep. Eric Swalwell tweeted a photo of himself at Eden Landing getting his hands dirty, both literally and figuratively.

Meanwhile, campaign finance reports from the last two election cycles show Swalwell padded his coffers with $20,350 in contributions from Calpine's political action committee and a number of its executives. The financial ties to the polluting power plant may present a weak spot for Swalwell's primary opponents to manipulate. Ties to Calpine have already tripped up two of the candidates for Hayward mayor.

In Hayward's 20th Assembly District race, Quirk's two challengers each sought to heavily exploit the issue during a candidate's forum earlier this month. Quirk has accepted over $14,000 from Calpine and its executives since 2012, according to finance recrods. But, potentially worse, he has registered support for the plant almost since its infancy while a member of the Hayward City Council. However, while Swalwell will say he supports the environment, don't expect him to call the plant "quite healthy" as Quirk did three weeks ago.

Swalwell is dirty literally and figuratively! He is backed by corporate interests and Tea Party interests. That's his base.

The choice is clearly Ellen Corbett for Congress!

Corbett is backed by union self-interests. That makes her better?

Ellen Corbett was elected to the California State Assembly in the 1998, and served there until 2004,

It was during that time that all the budget busting pension legislation was passed.... that has led to so many woes for cities up and down the state.
Ellen Corbett voted yes on each of those new laws that allowed "retroactive" pension boosts that overnight raised many state and local workers pensions by 35%.

San Leandro, her own town, saw their pensions raised overnight by 25% in one giant leap.
Years later after the public realized the damage being done, San Leandro lowered pensions back to the prior level.
However it was too late. The bills Corbett had passed made all the prior boosted pensions, locked in place.
In effect the Golden Parachute boosts were locked in place.
Many workers walked away with boosts amounting to from $300,000 to well over $1,000,000.
EVERYONE now knows that the original legislation was a financial disaster for the cities and the state.

Ellen Corbett, to this day, has never admitted she was part of that blunder.

PS.... the blunder lives on, because anyone hired in San Leandro, prior to the correction will get the jacked up rate until they retire... the collect that huge bonus all through their retirement.
Thus the damage that Ellen passed a decade ago, is going to be still hurting us for the next 40 to even 50 years.

That is what you get when you have a candidate that is totally beholden to public employee unions.
We have only begun to see the damage. Every local city is going to be paying ever higher contributions to CalPers to pay for this huge blunder.
Hundreds of billions of extra dollars taken out of local resources.
The single largest financial mistake ever made by the legislature in the history of California.
Ellen participated in each of those damaging votes.

I know this website likes to focus negative attacks on Swalwell, but almost every politician in the East Bay was "paid off" by Calpine and the building trades to approve or look the other way when it came to building the Russell City Power Plant. This includes the Hayward City Council ($10 million), East Bay Regional Park Board (new trail money and a few park benches), Bill Quirk as you point out, and one that I'm sure was by mistake (sarcasm) - Ellen Corbett.

Not only did she do nothing to stop it, she accepted campaign contributions from Calpine on numerous times but also benefitted from IBEW and State Building Trades with maxed out contributions for her behind the scenes work to get rid of any opposition to it as they had a coveted PRoject Labor Agreement to build it. Corbett was in power in the Assembly when it was first proposed and approved and in power when it was amended and built - not one town hall, not one letter, not one word opposing it.

So you get the representation that is bought and paid for. Shame on all of them for bringing this horrible polluter to the SF Bay. Shame on them for the increased threat to the wildlife. Shame on them for the damage to the health of the community who has to breath the exhaust.

FYI - There is also a letter floating out there that came from CalTrans - aviation that says Russell City could cause an airliner taking off or landing out of Oakland international to experience extreme turbulents from the plant that could cause a crash. Someone out there has a copy of it before it was politically redacted! Shame on them if this tragedy should ever happen.

Where do you think Eric Swalwell raised his over 1 million dollars for his race. Most of it came from big corporate donors like the one mentioned here. Mentioned earlier in the Citizen was all the money taken from huge pharmaceutical companies.

In this Congressional race Eric is the biggest pig slopping at the biggest trough. He has done nothing for his district's average citizen or middle class.

I'm voting for Ellen Corbett because she at least has put in bills that have helped the middle class consumers and the average citizen in our district.

Clearly Swalwell staffers and/or his inner circle here. Same with the comments about Swalwell's past marriage. It stayed because its a fact. Yet, this commenter seem to know way, way more.

If you want to a voice then talk to me instead of running. I know who writes all this garbage in the comments section. In fact, I've looked some straight in the eye. You know I know, too.

So that's where that bench came from . Sad:(
It's so easy to buy off politicians now a days. Is there any hope?

Steven... hyperbole says the pot to the kettle. How much has Calpine been fined for this "polluting plant" ? What numbers are you using for your claim?

By MW:

Some years ago I had a conversation with the son of one of the Bay area's most prominent politicians. The son himself was a lawyer, and his father, and who was also a lawyer, for many years had served as the DA of one of the Bay area's major cities.

{NOTE: That particular city is the only city in that county, so the DA was normally referred to as the XYZ (city) DA.}

So anyway, I described to the son one of the sleazier scams a certain politically connected criminal who owned a janitorial company had been getting away with for years, and also described to him how that politically connected criminal had a particular hotel manager bought off so that the hotel manager would look the other way and not object to the blatant and flagrant criminal activities going on, and which included a lot of undocumented alien trafficking going on in the crews of janitors that were being supplied to that hotel.

(NOTE: I emphasized that as far as I knew that particular hotel manger was not receiving actual under the table bribes, but instead was being bought off rather than paid off. While plenty of people, and especially in the Bay area, are being paid off, and such as through under the table bribes, however even more are bought off, and such as for instance through "legal" bribery, and as for instance through election campaign contributions.)

So the son, and who obviously had an extremely low opinion of both politicians and Bay area "ethics," said to me, "EVERYBODY IS BOUGHT OFF."

Remember that next time one of the local politicians "informs" you how "clean" Calpine is.

He looks really good in that photo. Just like in his new tv ad.

Also, Steven, he was married? Really? Like when? I mean, I don't think I've ever heard of this before and it seems totally out of context! Do dish!

Somebody needs to tell us what's happening and what Swalwell's priorities are. Thank you Tavaras for exposing this misguided congressman. Voting for Ellen Corbett this year and hope she wins in June and November.

Swallwell, Wackouski, Corbet and Quirk all have taken big money from Calpine

We know they all have but where do you think Eric Swalwell raised his over 1 million dollars for his race. Most of it came from big corporate donors like the one mentioned here. Mentioned earlier in the Citizen was all the money taken from huge pharmaceutical companies.
