CA-15 June Primary Preview: An Even Greater Challenge

Eric Swalwell, Ellen Corbett, Hugh Bussell
CONGRESS | 15TH DISTRICT | Two years ago, Eric Swalwell ended Pete Stark's four decades in Congress in one of the biggest political upsets in East Bay history. While Swalwell, a former Dublin city councilmember, was the benefactor of Stark's numerous missteps during the campaign, he also successfully positioned himself with voters in the 15th Congressional District as the candidate who would usher in an era of change and new ideas. This time around, his reelection campaign is attempting to rekindle a similar message for the future, but his main opponent this June, Democratic State Senate Majority Leader Ellen Corbett, appears to offer a more formidable challenge: She is nearly as well-known in the district as Stark was and is unlikely to commit the large number of mistakes that effectively put the congressional seat up for grabs two years ago.

In 2012, Swalwell's victory was also the product of blistering personal attacks that he launched at Stark and his family. An essential premise of Swalwell's campaign was to portray Stark as old, frail, and out of touch with East Bay voters. Swalwell followed it up with attacks on Stark's young children for receiving Social Security benefits, along with hits on Stark's wife....

  1. "Swalwell followed it up with attacks on Stark's young children for receiving Social Security benefits"

You are right, he should never have brought up the fact that a fully employed congressman with assets of over 20 million dollars was collecting thousand and thousands of dollars from Social Security for his young children.
Why, everyone in America would say that family needed and deserved that money. After all, the private school tuition for the three kids was nearly $75,000 a year. That Social Security money helped make ends meet.

Yes, Swalwell was out of line for even mentioning such payments. After all, even multi-millionaires have real needs.

  2. Wouldn't surprise me if Ellen got the most votes in the primary. She is more likable and nicer than Swalwell.

  3. She'll be kicked back to the gutter where she belongs.

  4. Send the Tea Baggers back to obscurity say no to Swalwell! Vote for Corbett!

  5. Swawell has an ad on the air attacking Corbett for missing 900+ votes in Sacramento- very effective

  6. Not attacking; 'explaining!'

  7. Swalwell will be a one term congressman because of all the lies he told that the Citizen exposed.

  8. Swalwell's lies when he ran against Stark were never reported in the mainstream press(except for the Citizen) and most of us overlooked them because we didn't like Stark, including me. This is a different race against Ellen Corbett who is a well liked, experienced, capable and trusted woman. My wife and I voted for Eric last time but this time will vote for Ellen. His lies have caught up with our Congressman. We can't stand someone who says one thing and does another on so many different occasions.

  9. 8:23 am comment: "Wouldn't surprise me if Ellen got the most votes in the primary. She is more likable and nicer than Swalwell." Really? Your primary criteria for who you vote for is they are likable and nicer. I don't like either one of the mentioned candidates but comments like yours don't give me much faith in today's voters.

  10. Corbett did have the guts to take on Stark. This whole business of a politician owning his elected position until he decides he is ready to retire is a disservice to voters. Corbett is career politician ing from one elected position to another. I am tired of them. Now she wants what Swalwell worked hard for because she didn't have the courage to stand up and run against Pete.

  11. Can't vote for anyone who lies as much as Swalwell. Time after time, after time his lies were explained on this blog. Thank you Steven for doing your homework.

My family will be voting for Ellen Corbett even though we don't agree with every vote she makes. Truthfulness is very important to us and we are fed up with our current Congressman's lies and mis-statements. Some might call it B.S.
