Bill McCammon, former Alameda County Fire Chief, dies

McCammon's 2006 Assembly race against
Mary Hayashi was notable for its vitriol.
ALAMEDA COUNTY | Bill McCammon, a former Alameda County fire chief and head of the the East Bay Regional Communication System Authority, died in his sleep Monday morning from an apparent heart attack. He was 61.

In addition to leading the Alameda County Fire Department for 13 years, McCammon previously served as fire chief in San Leandro. He currently held the post of executive director for the East Bay Regional Communication System Authority.

Politically, McCammon was involved in one of the most infamous Assembly races in recent history against Mary Hayashi. During a particularly hostile primary race in 2006, both Democrats routinely and harshly slammed each other in campaign mailers. Hayashi won the primary over McCammon by less than two percent.

McCammon was born and raised in Oakland and resided in Pleasanton.

McCammon is survived by his wife, Rose Johnson Padilla, the executive director of San Leandro's Davis Street Resource Center and their three children.

Such a great loss to the San Francisco Bay Area. He was such a great advocate for the public safety community. My condolences to his wife and family.

This is such a loss for our community and a tragedy for this beautiful family. Bill was passionate about public safety. I had the pleasure of presenting with him at many community events, and he will be missed by many communities. Blessings to his wonderful wife Rose, their children, and his extended family. Rest in Peace, Bill.

GOD BLESS you and your family Bill. You were an awesome friend, leader and Fire Chief. The ACFD is what it is today because of your leadership. It was my pleasure to know you and work for you. Your memories will live on!

What a loss for all of us! Bill was a smart, generous, kind, and caring visionary who continued working for the public good in retirement and in his many volunteer positions. Good bye, dear friend and thank you for giving us so much.

Bill was a great man, and a constant advocate for better communication between first responders. His voice is lost to us, but his commitment isn't - we'll carry on to implement his vision.

Bill was both a friend and colleague. We both shared expertise on the subject of Public Safety Interoperability. We learned from each other. He worked tirelessly the Bay Area and the nation become better prepared through communications during normal and catastrophic events. Now that EBRCSA is in place, I assure you Bill, we will carry on. Peace be with you. My heart goes out to his family.

Did my part and voted for clean Bill over HO-yashi in the primary. Later went with Republican Jill since I can't vote for whores.

RIP, Bill.
