In 2014, Libby Schaaf's path to the Oakland mayor's office was famously paved by a pivotal endorsement from Gov. Jerry Brown. Next year, Schaaf hopes her imprimatur will have the same effect for Oakland Councilmember Dan Kalb and his campaign next year for the 15th Assembly District.

Nearly 10 months from the June 2018 primary, Schaaf announced her endorsement of Kalb's campaign.

“I have worked closely with Councilmember Kalb over the last four and-a-half years as Mayor of Oakland and as a councilmember, and I’ve been impressed by the leadership, vision and dedication he brings to City Hall every day,” said Schaaf.

“Dan will bring a strong progressive voice to Sacramento to fight for social justice, affordable housing, improvements in educational outcomes, and saving our planet from the ravages of climate change. I have complete confidence in Dan’s understanding of the issues and his ability to get things done. We need Dan Kalb in Sacramento fighting for Oakland, the East Bay and all of California.”

The early endorsement comes after Richmond Councilmember Jovanka Beckles, one of the four other current candidates who have filed for the seat, received the backing of Our Revolution East Bay, the local affiliate of the group carved from of Sen. Bernie Sanders' presidential campaign.

Kalb, Beckles, in addition, to Berkeley school board member Judy Appel, East Bay Municipal Utilities District board director Andy Katz, and political consultant Buffy Wicks have filed for the chance to replace Assemblymember Tony Thurmond, who is not seeking re-election in order to run for state superintendent of public instruction next spring.

The 15th District includes Richmond and Berkeley, along with North Oakland, where Kalb has represented on the Oakland City Council since 2012.

But, although the 15th District does not typically revolve around Oakland like, say, Assemblymember Rob Bonta's 18th District, Schaaf's endorsement will likely transcend district boundaries due to her high name-recognition in the Bay Area.
