Ro Khanna to appear Friday on HBO's Real Time With Bill Maher

Bill Maher will be joined by East Bay Rep.
Ro Khanna this Friday, Jan. 26.
To the unexpected, the scene might seem to be the result of a strange fever dream.

This Friday, Rep. Ro Khanna will share the stage with actress Zooey Deschanel and others on HBO's Real Time with Bill Maher.

It's a big get for Khanna, who represents voters in Fremont and Silicon Valley, to appear on the late-night public affairs comedy program popular among progressives and, yes, pot smokers. The latter subset is likely the reason for Khanna's appearance.

Last week, Khanna, along with fellow East Bay Rep. Barbara Lee, introduced a House bill to legalize cannabis at the federal level.

Bill Maher is a noted long-time advocate for legalization.

There's definitely some irony involved here. While Maher is an avowed pot head, Khanna last year said he has never tried cannabis, in part, because he suffers from asthma.

In addition to Khanna and Deschanel, Friday's lineup, airing at 10 p.m. pacific time, includes New York Times columnist Michelle Goldberg and GOP consultant Rick Wilson.

  1. Better buy a new suit. The 2014 suit is getting a little young.

  2. Mr. Khanna made some reasonable comments. What I found interesting in watching the whole show is that Mr. Maher's rhetoric is now far left of Ro Khanna, Left of Bernie Sanders, Left of President Obama, and close to that of Mao Zedong. I appreciate Mr. Maher's stance on radical Islam, but it must be a late-night thing now with Chelsea Handler, Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert to transform comedy into liberal, snowflake nonsense. There used to be a thing called "political humor." It was really funny, not a biased fake call to action. I hope reasonable political humor returns. I guess these people are playing to their markets on the coasts. Thankfully, there are lots of the silent majority elsewhere, who are watching something else.
